Performance at Res in Deptford (London, UK).

An “avatar” navigates the hypertext, reading aloud.

A second “avatar” drags the chalk “Barber Stone” across the floor, in concentric ripples, until the reading ends.

The chalk lines run around the works in the gallery, remaining as a floor drawing until the end of the exhibition.

>>>> Presented at Res, part of Enclave Projects in Deptford (London, UK) in curator Lucy A Same’s Janusware exhibition.

>>>>Janusware was included in the 2017 Art Licks Weekend and DeptfordX

After the performance, access to hypertext was made via a touch-screen Kiosk.

The hypertext was updated and changed periodically during the exhibition.

This (hyper)text, performance and installation considers the wyrd and weird topology of the ancient site and standing stones of Avebury – both in Somerset and their displaced and decontextualized outlier in Gordon Square, London – and the enigma of the displaced “Barber Surgeon” skeleton, found buried under one of the monoliths.

Stone 38 concerns shifting positions, ley-lines, “fake news”, power dynamics and the problems of trying to triangulate a position within the nebulous sediment of history and the unfolding precarious present.
